Green Space Cafe, Ferndale Michigan
My daughter, Kristyn, met me for dinner last night at Green Space Cafe in downtown Ferndale, Michigan.
Joel Kahn, MD, an acclaimed cardiologist and author of, ““The Whole Heart Solution: Halt Heart Disease Now with the Best Alternative and Traditional Medicine”believes in food as medicine and has devoted his career to educating others about the healing power of plants.
“With the help of a talented team, the Kahns opened GreenSpace Café, metro Detroit’s first plant-based restaurant and bar inspired by health, as well as global culinary traditions and Detroit’s exciting artisan food culture.
Dedicated to transforming fresh, nutritious ingredients into delectable plant-based dishes, GreenSpace Café celebrates the joy of beautiful, healthy food. Using mostly organic ingredients, we hand craft all dishes, dressings and sauces and offer allergy-friendly gluten-, soy-, nut- and oil-free options. We use no GMOs, no preservatives, no processed foods, no microwaves or fryers, and no animal products. Even all alcohol is researched to assure no dyes, no added sulfites, and no animal products are used in the fining process. From greens and grains to cashew cheeses and cocktails, every carefully chosen ingredient comes from the earth and is sourced as sustainably and locally as possible” (Green Space Cafe).
I have been to Green Space many times. My mother and I were invited to the pre-opening event of the restaurant before it opened, and we have been back several times. The food is incredible, and they even cater to the healthiest plant-based eaters with an oil-free separate menu. It is designated PP: Produced free of any cooking oils, coconut, nuts, avocado and refined sugars following the Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn Plant-Perfect Diet.
It was happy hour, so we started with a couple appetizers to split. We chose The Wild Mushroom Toast, which was to die for.
WILD MUSHROOM TOAST
Enoki, oyster and shiitake mushrooms, smoked cashew cheese, peas and parsley
We moved onto Caesar Salad, which I can say is the BEST vegan caesar I have ever had.
Organic leaf lettuce and romaine tossed in a creamy garlic-caper dressing, garbanzos, pickled onion, tofu, almond parmesan, grilled ciabatta
Kristyn ordered a Kimchee Bowl, which she was nice enough to let me taste. This entree had a PP option, making it oil-free.
Stir-fried short grain rice with green onion, sliced cucumber, peas, kale, baby bok choy, house-made kimchee and Korean chili sauce, black and white sesame furikake
Very Spicy • GF • NF • OF option • PP option
I ordered a Macro Bowl, which I would definitely order again. This entree also comes oil-free (PP).
Sweet potato mash, house-fermented kimchee, brown rice, pickled wakame, Michigan tofu, braised collard greens
GF • NF • OF option • PP option
Dr. Joel Kahn sat at the bar with us and spoke with us while we ate. He signed his book for other customers, and he is very personable and actively involved in his restaurant.
I would HIGHLY recommend going to Green Space Cafe if you are ever in the Detroit area.
